The miniature railway museum located in the Karve Road locality of Pune was conceptualized by Late Mr. B. S. Joshi (1932-1998), known to all as Bhau Joshi. An engineer by profession, collecting train models was his hobby. Soon he started building models and exhibiting it in various cities.
Founded in 1875, it was called Poona Industrial Museum and was subsequently named Lord Ray Museum. In 1968 it was renamed as Mahatma Phule Vastu Sanghralay. The 138 year old museum houses rare artefacts which offer a peek into the glorious history of India. As one enters the museum, past the 1959-built howitzer, one is transported back in time. The solid stone structure of the building too lends an air of history.
The National Film Archive of India, headquartered in Pune, is a living heritage of Indian cinema and is one of the major film archives in Asia. Established in 1964, NFAI has a wide collection of journals, tapes, scripts, photographs, posters and records. The building is exquisitely designed in old British architecture. Centrally air conditioned, the museum collects award winning films, box office hits, off beat and critically acclaimed films which are shown at International Film Festivals.
The museum contains the collection of Dr Dinkar G. Kelkar (1896–1990), dedicated to the memory of his only son, Raja, who died an untimely tragic death. The three-storey building houses sculptures, ornaments made of ivory, silver and gold, musical instruments, war weapons and vessels, etc.
